Brother Knights, (see Word File Attachment at the very bottom of this page - scroll down) you will find the schedule for the yearly pancake breakfast. As you can see we have a few months open. Since this is a Knights function I would prefer that we do it rather than go to the parish for assistance. Brother Jodi will be there every month and I know that 4 people are not really needed but it will make it go smoother with clean-up and such.

I know that I do not have every ones E-Mail address so if you know of a Brother Knight that is willing to assist please let me know.

Send me an E-Mail with your telephone number and the dates that you can perform the duties. I will fill in the slots on a first come basis.

As always your participation, and assistance is appreciated.

The Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 7402 is conducting a fund raising program offering this fine porcine specimen as the grand prize in their HOG Raffle.

District Deputy Floyd Pace awarded brother Tom Pannunzio with the Knight of the Quarter award at the knights council 7402 business meeting this evening at St. Jude. He received his plaque and a check for $75.00

They installed shelving and finished the electrical work.

Well attended meeting. We had pizza and cookies, coffee and soda. District Deputy Floyd Pace presided, assisted by District Warden Jim Kennedy. In attendance were Grand Knights of the various councils in the district together with Financial Secretaries, Deputy Grand Knights and other council representatives.

Attending from Council 7402 were Grand Knight Bill Clark, Deputy Grand Knight Tommy Boatwright, Financial Secretary Jerry Burroughs, Recruitment Director Jim Kennedy and Lecturer and incoming Chancellor Deacon Tom Buenavista.

While Grand Knight Ron from Milton shared with us his techniques at conducting effective business meetings, Grand Knight Bill Clark's state of council 7402 report included a plug for the upcoming HOG raffle.

District Deputy, Floyd Pace and our very own Director of Recruitment and Retention, Jim Kennedy arranged for the Grand Knight Training Session to be held for all members of the district. It was well attended. The presentors included the State Deputy Schoenfeld and the presentor was William Sukel from Supreme.

At the end of the training session it was announced that brother Floyd has been assigned as the Regional Membership Coordinator for Districts 1, 2, and 3. This will yet be another responsibility tacked on to his already burgeoning list of tasks. We congratulate brother knight Floyd Pace.

Brother Knight Tom Pannunzio has completely renovated the pedestal, and reworked the wooden arch work of the St. Jude niche to include a nicely custom-carved wood casing. He has created a skylight to help cast sunlight to illumine the crypt. The niche looks so much brighter now and especially when most of the votive candles are lit up.

We continue to give our thanks to Brother Knight Tom Pannunzio and to the Knights of Columbus, Council 7402 for their dedication and commitment to the parish.

The Bronze Star Medal is awarded For heroic or meritorious achievement of service, not involving aerial flight in connection with operations against an opposing armed force.

Authorized on February 4, 1944 the Bronze Star Medal is awarded to members of all branches of military service and may be awarded either for combat heroism or for meritorious service.

US Navy Commander and Brother Knight Daniel P. Seep, the son of Brother Knight Bob Seep and Martha Seep is the proud recipient of the US Navy Bronze Star Medal.

All members of Knights of Columbus, Council 7402 join Bob and Martha Seep in their moment of great pride in the outstanding achievement of their son Dan.

The concrete slab where the old quonset hut for a churchstoodin the long ago is quietly being transformed into additional parking for St. Jude parishioners.

Tommy Boatright sawed off the remaining steel studs to ground level, Mike Sobiecki and Billy Randell erected the barrier fence with the help of Jerry Burroughs and George Boudreaux.

Now they have began to refurbish the roof under the capable leadership of Bruce Alberque.

What a team!

If you didn't make it to the Knights monthly meeting last night, Thursday, April 10th, these are some of the things you missed out on:

Fellowship started at 5:30 pm. While the beer was chilling, we prepared a batch of Johnsonville bratwurst on the grill, complete with the complimentary sauteed onions and bell peppers condiment, served in a freshly "mayo-mustard painted" French bun.

The meeting started in earnest at 6:30 pm covering old business, new business and the roof project.

We missed you at the meeting and we hope to see you in the next one.

Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ignited a firestorm of abortion-related comment heading into the Democratic National Conference in Denver when she said on television the Catholic Church, of which she claims membership, never has been able to define the start of a human life.

The archbishop of Denver and several others immediately issued statements correcting her, and suggesting that she correct her statement, emphasizing that abortion always is wrong under Catholic teachings.
Now the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has weighed in, saying, "Since the first century the church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law."

It was on NBC's "Meet the Press" when Pelosi said on the beginning of life:

I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition … St. Augustine said at three months. We don't know. The point is, is that it shouldn't have an impact on the woman's right to choose.

Wrong, said the bishops.

"In response to those who say this teaching has changed or is of recent origin, here are the facts:" the group said. "From earliest times, Christians sharply distinguished themselves from surrounding pagan cultures by rejecting abortion and infanticide. The earliest widely used documents of Christian teaching … condemned both practices."

While definitions of the biology involved changed over the years, "such mistaken biological theories never changed the church's common conviction that abortion is gravely wrong at every stage," the USCCB said.
"Given the scientific fact that a human life begins at conception, the only moral norm needed to understand the Church's opposition to abortion is the principle that each and every human life has inherent dignity, and thus must be treated with the respect due to a human person. This is the foundation for the Church's social doctrine. … Conversely, to claim that some live human beings do not deserve respect or should not be treated as 'persons' … is to deny the very idea of inherent human rights," the group said.

WND reported earlier when the Denver Catholic archbishop, Charles Chaput, said Pelosi and those who claim abortion can be reconciled with the Christian faith simply don't know Christianity.

The issue hits hard at the Democratic Party because the Democratic presidential nominee, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, is an ardent abortion proponent who has gone beyond the desires of even the National Abortion Rights Action League in advocating for the controversial procedure. In fact, as a state lawmaker in Illinois, he declined to support a requirement that an abortionist provide necessary medical services to a baby who survives an abortion, because it would be a burden on the abortionist.

"It's always important to know what our faith actually teaches," Chaput said. "The future of a community, a people, a church and a nation depends on the children who will inherit it. If we prevent our children from being born, we remove ourselves from the future. It's really that simple. No children, no future."
Later, 19 Catholic members of Congress suggested Pelosi offer a correction.

"We are compelled to refute your error," said the letter signed by Reps. Thaddeus McCotter, Steve Chabot, Virginia Foxx, Phil Gingrey, Peter King (NY), Steve King (IA), Dan Lungren, Devin Nunes, John Sullivan, Pat Tiberi, John Boehner, Phil English, Jean Schmidt, Jim Walsh, Jeff Fortenberry, Michael McCaul, Paul Ryan, Walter Jones and Mike Ferguson.

"Your erroneous claim about the history of the church's opposition to abortion is false and denigrates our common faith," the letter said.

A WND message requesting a comment from Pelosi was not returned.

Members of the Knights of Columbus Catholic organization have taken out ads to appear tomorrow in USA Today, the Washington Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and Delaware News Journal asking Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden to correct his statements about abortion.
Reminding him that under Catholic teaching, "abortion is a grave sin to be avoided at any time during a pregnancy," the organization attributes to Biden a "unique responsibility" to be correct when making public statements about the faith.

"Sen. Obama stressed your Catholic identity repeatedly when he introduced you as his running mate, and so your statements carry considerable weight, whether they are correct or not. You now have a unique responsibility when you make public statements about Catholic teaching," the letter says.
The issue of abortion has become a flashpoint in the 2008 presidential election for the Democratic nominees, Sens. Obama and Biden, at least in part because Obama is an ardent abortion proponent who has gone beyond the desires of even the National Abortion Rights Action League in advocating for the controversial procedure.
In fact, as a state lawmaker in Illinois, he declined to support a requirement that an abortionist provide necessary medical services to a baby who survives an abortion, because it would be a burden on the abortionist.

Catholic bishops also criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., when she told NBC's "Meet the Press" about the beginning of life:

I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition … St. Augustine said at three months. We don't know. The point is, is that it shouldn't have an impact on the woman's right to choose.

Now Biden is coming under criticism for his public statements about abortion and Catholicism.
The letter being published is signed Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, and it cites Biden's comments on "Meet the Press" as well. He "appealed to the 13th Century writings of St. Thomas Aquinas to cast doubt on the consistent teaching of the Catholic Church on abortion."

That has several problems, Anderson wrote.

"First, Aquinas obviously had only a medieval understanding of biology, and thus could only speculate about how an unborn child develops in the womb," Anderson said. "I doubt that there is any other area of public policy where you would appeal to a 13th Century knowledge of biology as the basis for modern law."

"Second, Aquinas' theological view is in any case entirely consistent with the long history of Catholic Church teaching in this area, holding that abortion is a grave sin to be avoided at any time during pregnancy," the letter said.

Such teaching has been consistent in the Catholic Church since as far back as the 2nd Century, the letter noted.

The problem is that Biden's statements can have an impact because of his position, the letter said.
"Statements that suggest that our church has anything less than a consistent teaching on abortion are not merely incorrect; they may lead Catholic women facing crisis pregnancies to misunderstand the moral gravity of an abortion decision," the letter warned, citing Biden's support for Roe v. Wade.

"I recognize that you struggle with your conscience on the issue, and have said that you accept the church's teaching that life begins at conception – as a matter of faith. But modern medical science leaves no doubt about the fact that each person's life begins at conception. It is not a matter of personal religious belief, but of science," Anderson wrote.

The issue over life and abortion is one that Catholics feel strongly about, according to polls. A Christian Science Monitor report said Sen. John McCain had opened a 16 percent lead among Catholics recently. Many Catholics had left their traditional Democratic Party home and become independents, but the GOP team of McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin is changing the dynamic.

"We have strong evidence that the Palin pick was the big part of it," Scott Keeter, director of survey research at Pew, told the Monitor. "Gov. Palin's large family and her decision to bear her fifth child despite a diagnosis of Down syndrome mean she embodies anti-abortion beliefs dear to many observant Catholics. But McCain's pick also reassured these voters on 'a whole constellation of values issues that are important to conservative Christians.'"

Anderson's letter also cited Abraham Lincoln's argument against slavery, which he stated this way: "He who would be no slave, must consent to have no slave."

"Lincoln's reasoning regarding slavery applies with equal force to children who are minutes, hours, days away from birth," the letter said.

"You have a choice: you can listen to your conscience and work to secure the rights of the unborn to share in the fruits of our hard-won liberty, or you can choose to turn your back on them," Anderson said.

Mike Sobiecki Grand Knight The Grand Knight is the top ranking officer of the Council. He oversees all of the Council's activities and is elected by the members of the Council. Some of his duties include presiding over meetings, countersigning orders and checks, reading vouchers and notices relative to the Fourth Degree.	Tommy Boatright Deputy Grand Knight The Deputy Grand Knight is second in command in the council. He assists the grand knight in the operation of the council affairs and is responsible for any duties assigned to him by the grand knight. Should the grand knight be absent from a council meeting, the deputy grand knight will preside.	Jerry Burroughs Financial Secretary The Financial Secretary is appointed by the Supreme Knight upon recommendation of the council. His main area of responsibility is maintaining all financial and membership records, much like a comptroller of a private company. He collects and receives all monies from all sources, including annual dues from council members. He also handles supply orders for the council officers and members, filing the Report of Officers, and submitting all membership transactions to the Supreme Council.
James Higginbotham Recorder The Recorder is similar to a court reporter or a secretary. He is responsible for maintaining a true record of all actions of the council and its correspondence.	Charles F. Wilson Treasurer The Treasurer is responsible for the safe-keeping and maintaining records of all council funds and accounts. He is responsible for depositing money into the council's accounts and provides a certificate of such monies to the grand knight. He is also responsible for the payment of all expenses.	Jim Kennedy Chancellor Primarily, the Chancellor assists the Grand Knight and Deputy Grand Knight in the execution of their duties and takes charge of the council in the absence of the grand knight and deputy grand knight. He is charged with strengthening the members interests in council activities.
Deacon Tom Buenavista Lecturer The Lecturer is appointed by the Grand Knight to provide both educational and entertaining programs to the council. He is responsible for the 'Good of the Order' portion of council meetings. In order to provide members with informative and educational programs, he must be knowledgeable and aware of all council programming.	Bruce Alberque Trustee for one year The Board of Trustees consists of three members elected by the council and the grand knight, who serves as chairman of the board. They oversee the work of the financial secretary and treasurer, and with the deputy grand knight serve on the council's retention committee. During council elections, only the third year trustee is voted on, with the others moving on to become two-year and one-year trustees, respectively.	Floyd Pace Trustee for two years The Board of Trustees consists of three members elected by the council and the grand knight, who serves as chairman of the board. They oversee the work of the financial secretary and treasurer, and with the deputy grand knight serve on the council's retention committee. During council elections, only the third year trustee is voted on, with the others moving on to become two-year and one-year trustees, respectively.
Bob Seep Advocate The Advocate is the legal representative of the council and serves as the council's attorney at trials and investigations of any interest to the council. While he does not need to be a member of the legal profession, he should be familiar with the council by-laws, the Order's Charter, Constitution and Laws, Methods of Conducting a Council Meeting, and Robert's Rules of Order.	Ray Merritt Warden The Warden is the material control manager for council property and degree paraphernalia, except the property of the financial secretary, treasurer, and recorder. He is also responsible for setting up the council chambers for meetings and ceremonial work. During ceremonial exemplifications, the warden will appoint and supervise guards.	John McKeon Trustee for Three Years The Board of Trustees consists of three members elected by the council and the grand knight, who serves as chairman of the board. They oversee the work of the financial secretary and treasurer, and with the deputy grand knight serve on the council's retention committee. During council elections, only the third year trustee is voted on, with the others moving on to become two-year and one-year trustees, respectively.
Jim Hearn Inside Guard The Inside/Outside Guards have similar responsibilities. They tend to the door admitting visitors and members to the inner door. They help the Warden with checking for membership cards and in preparing the hall for meetings.	Tom Pannunzio Outside Guard The Inside/Outside Guards have similar responsibilities. DENVER - Denver Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput (photo at left) says Democrats simply don't know Christianity if they insist on continuing to spin the Bible's teachings on abortion.

"It's always important to know what our faith actually teaches," he said in a "clarification" for Catholics in northern Colorado as Democratic National Committee members met in Denver this week to hear a speaker from the National Abortion Rights Action League promote Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, as the next "pro-choice" president.

Chaput's also appeared at a pro-life prayer vigil outside the massive new Planned Parenthood abortion facility in Denver, reportedly the largest abortion megaclinic in the nation.
"The future of a community, a people, a church and a nation depends on the children who will inherit it," he said at the event. "If we prevent our children from being born, we remove ourselves from the future. It's really that simple. No children, no future.

"We need to remember two basic truths. Here's the first truth. Society has an obligation – and Christians have a Gospel duty – to provide adequate and compassionate support for unwed and abandoned mothers women facing unintended pregnancies; and women struggling with the aftermath of an abortion. It's not enough to talk about 'pro-life politics,' The label 'pro-life' demands that we work to ensure social policies that will protect young women and families, and help them generously in their need. In the archdiocese of Denver we try very hard to do that through the Gabriel Project and other forms of outreach and support.

"Here's the second truth. Killing an unborn child is never the right answer to a woman's or society's problems. Acts of violence create a culture of violence—and abortion is the most intimate form of violence there is. It wounds the woman, it kills the unborn child and it poisons the roots of justice and charity that bind us all into one human family," he said.

In his clarification for church members, he denounced the "spin" among politicians seeking to justify abortion and appease militant pro-abortion interests, including the billion-dollar Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest player in its abortion industry.

"Catholic public leaders inconvenienced by the abortion debate tend to take a hard line in talking about the 'separation of church and state.' But their idea of separation often seems to work one way. In fact, some officials also seem comfortable in the role of theologian. And that warrants some interest, not as a 'political' issue, but as a matter of accuracy and justice," he wrote.

"Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is a gifted public servant of strong convictions and many professional skills. Regrettable, knowledge of Catholic history and teaching does not seem to be one of them," Chaput continued.

The archbishop pointed to Pelosi's interview Sunday on the NBC's "Meet the Press" when she was asked when human life begins. The House speaker said:

I would say that as an ardent, practicing Catholic, this is an issue that I have studied for a long time. And what I know is over the centuries, the doctors of the church have not been able to make that definition … St. Augustine said at three months. We don't know. The point is, is that it shouldn't have an impact on the woman's right to choose.

Chaput said Pelosi, because of her "study," must know the conclusions from Jesuit John Connery's "Abortion: The Development of the Roman Catholic Perspective."

Connery concludes with: "The Christian tradition from the earliest days reveals a firm antiabortion attitude … The condemnation of abortion did not depend on and was not limited in any way by theories regarding the time of fetal animation. Even during the many centuries when church penal and penitential practice was based on the theory of delayed animation, the condemnation of abortion was never affected by it. Whatever one would want to hold about the time of animation, or when the fetus became a human being in the strict sense of the term, abortion from the time of conception was considered wrong, and the time of animation was never looked on as a moral dividing line between permissible and impermissible abortion."

Chaput continued: "Or to put it in the blunter words of the great Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer: 'Destruction of the embryo in the mother's womb is a violation of the right to live which God has bestowed on this nascent life. To raise the question whether we are here concerned already with a human being or not is merely to confuse the issue. The simple fact is that God certainly intended to create a human being and that this nascent human being has been deliberately deprived of his life. And that is nothing but murder.'"
He said the church's early fathers held abortion was homicide; "others that it was tantamount to homicide."
"None diminished the unique evil of abortion as an attack on life itself, and the early church closely associated abortion with infanticide," he said.

Members of the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy also agreed with Chaput, issuing a statement that not only were Pelosi's statements inaccurate, "Catholics, especially politicians, who publicly defend abortion should not receive communion, and ... ministers of communion should be responsibly charitable in denying it to them if they ask for it, 'until they have reformed their lives.'"

"Abortion (including the willful destruction of human embryos) and euthanasia are always intrinsically evil since they involve the intentional killing of innocent life," the group said.

Such issues hit home with the Democratic Party in this 2008 campaign, since Obama, who has called himself a Christian, opposed a measure as an Illinois state senator to protect babies who survive abortion procedures, because, among other reasons, it would be too burdensome on abortionists.

"From the beginning, the believing Christian community held that abortion was always, gravely wrong," Chaput said. "Of course, we now know with biological certainly exactly when human life begins. Thus, today's religious alibis for abortion and a so-called 'right to chose' are nothing more than that – alibis that break radically with historic Christian and Catholic belief," he said.

"Abortion kills an unborn, developing human life. It is always gravely evil, and so are the evasions employed to justify it," he said. "The duty of the church and other religious communities is moral witness. The duty of the state and its officials is to serve the common good, which is always rooted in moral truth. A proper understanding of the 'separation of church and state' does not imply a separation of faith from political life. But of course, it's always important to know what our faith actually teaches."

At the vigil in front of the Planned Parenthood business, where he was joined by Alveda King, Chaput said the project "would offend every African-American and Latino family, and all of us, because every child lost to abortion here subtracts one more life, one more universe of possibilities and talent, from the future of this community. … The business of Planned Parenthood is the prevention of the future – and business is good, and very profitable, at the expense of this community."

A report by the Associated Press highlighted the faith of Sen. Joe Biden, Obama's pick to be vice president. The report told how he underwent brain surgery for a life-threatening aneurysm in 1988 and asked if doctors would allow him to tuck his rosary beads under his pillow.

But Chaput told AP Biden should refrain even from taking communion because of his support for abortion.
While Obama has been documented as being more pro-abortion than even NARAL, Biden has said he'll "accept" Catholic church teaching that life starts at conception. However, he said allowing virtually unlimited abortions under Roe vs. Wade "is as close" as society can get to respecting different religious views.
Chaput has stated that such deviancy from church teachings disqualifies those individuals from partaking of communion, which in the Catholic church is believed to involve the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ.

Brother Knights,

What is TEAMWORK?

Webster defines teamwork as the quality whereby individuals unselfishly subordinate their own part to the general effort of the group with whom they are working or playing.

By its very definition, this would describe the success or failure of any organization but particularly describes the church. Priests need the help of the congregation and the parish council. The parish council needs input of parishioners, the parishioners need the ownership of organizations such as the Altar Society and the Knights of Columbus.

It takes full commitment from all of these groups as well as the involvement and dedication of the church body to assure a successful church.

There are many examples of teamwork. The recent Parish Festival, with the combined efforts of St. Elizabeth and St. Jude's, shows what teamwork could produce. This event gave a true example of many people and/or organizations working together to insure success. Parishioners provided covered dishes in great abundance. Members also provided music, buggy rides, the Altar Society furnished the Bounce Balloon and the Knights of Columbus provided and cooked the hamburgers and hot dogs. All of this was spearheaded by Deputy Grand Knight Tommy Boatwright of Council 7402.

Everyone that I have talked with had nothing but the highest praise, and expressed hope that we can repeat the event in the fall when the weather is a little cooler.

I, as Grand Knight, would like to personally thank all of the parishioners who provided teamwork. The Parish Festival is a true example of TEAMWORK.

Teamwork has no boundaries and there is a great need for your involvement. Please consider where you may help and be a part of the TEAM.

Come and join other men from the Knights of Columbus and the parish on Wednesday Mornings from 8 to 11 am. We sure could use your help, skill and expertise.

We usually start out the day by attending the 8:30 AM Mass followed with fellowship—over a hot cup of coffee and some pastries—light, by Starbucks standards, morning fare to get you going. Then we delve head on into the projects, working and having fun in earnest. Chilled refreshments are available all during the day so feel free to help yourself to the soda pop, water, or iced tea.

Council dues for the 2008/2009 year were due 07/01/08. Regular Membership Dues are $30.00 per year. Each year the Council is asked to make a contribution of $15.00 for Helping Life and $5.00 for Vocations for each member including Honorary Life and Disabled members.

Last year through our Council’s contributions we were able to help four local Pregnancy Resource Centers. In the past we have received voluntary contributions from roughly 20% of the members.
So far this year the response has been much better. If you have not sent in your dues, please do so asap and also please consider making the voluntary contributions.

About the author - James Higginbotham is the chairperson of the Knights Tootsie Roll Drive. The drives have been very successful largely to his efforts with the help of other brother knights and their families. Jim is also the Recorder for Council 7402. Additionally he is the master chef of the Pancake Breakfasts served on selected Sundays after Mass, creating exotic concoctions such as the Greek Yogurt accompaniment to the berry pancakes.

Morning Star is an academic program that provides individualized instruction to elementary and middle school children, with varying special needs. The staff of Morning Star has developed a unique program that is designed to build the children’s basic academic, social behavior, daily living, and Christian faith.

Embracing the challenge of providing, developing, and implementing new and unique programs are Jan Powell, Trish Lee, and Micki Pretto. These wonderful teachers, that this writer refers to as guardian angels, have devoted many years (ranging from 3 to 14 years) to improve the lives of these extraordinary children. The guardian angels do not just face the challenge of developing curricula that are geared for the needs of each child, but also face the problem of funding. In July I visited Jan Powell to present the funds raised during the Tootsie Roll drive (see photo A) and was shocked to discover the expense involved in individualized teaching.
Powell was in the process of preparing for the upcoming school year by ordering a new reading program that cost $800.00 dollars just for three of the students.

The Morning Star program is dependent on the generosity of others to make sure that supplies, educational programs, and special equipment are available for the staff and students. It is very important that we continue to participate in programs such as the Tootsie Roll drive to make sure that funds are there for the continued development of the Morning Star program. If the Morning Star program were not available the children would be forced to attend public schools, which are not properly equipped to give the students the one-on-one time or dedication they need to insure the best chances for their success. Last year one of the Morning Star program’s alumni graduated from Tulane University, which he attended on a full football scholarship. He has made it very clear that he owes his success to the staff and the Morning Star program.

Providing quality care and education requires a great deal of time, money, and dedication. The teachers have plenty of dedication, time is set, but the funds are dependent on the voluntary work we as Knight of Columbus perform. Next year I would like all of us to remember the impact that our time and dedication to fundraising programs has on the development of the students and the staff at Morning Star.

In closing I would like to thank the staff at Morning Star for their dedication and just ask that God continue to give them the strength, courage, and faith to continue leading those that need their love and support. I would also like to share one of the programs created by the staff to develop the students’ understanding of economics. The program allows the students to choose a job (see photos B and C). The job has a set weekly pay and the students open checking accounts and are assigned checks so they may pay their monthly bills.
Programs like this are designed to prepare the students for social interaction as well as to improve motor skills. It is programs like this that show the creativity and dedication used by the staff at Morning Star to develop new ideas that use every day activities to prepare the students for the future.

(Quebec City, Quebec) - Delegates to the annual international convention of the Knights of Columbus today adopted a resolution opposing "any governmental action or policy that promotes abortion, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, euthanasia, assisted suicide and other offenses against life."

The delegates also challenged "our fellow Catholics who are elected officials to be true to the faith they claim to profess by acting bravely and publicly in defense of life, affirming with Pope Benedict XVI that 'there can be no room for purely private religion.'"

The resolution stated that the organization reaffirms its "commitment to building a culture of life by promoting policies that favor the family," and reaffirmed the organization's "long standing policy of not inviting to any Knights of Columbus event persons, especially public officials or candidates for public office, who do not support the legal protection of unborn children."
The resolution on life issues follows by several days the opening convention address by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson, in which he called on Catholic voters to "stop accommodating pro-abortion politicians," and encouraged them to "say 'no' to every candidate of every political party who supports abortion."
Delegates also adopted a resolution calling for "legal and constitutional protection . . . for the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others."
The resolution declares that "marriage is a natural institution based on ancient human values that have evolved over time into a unique and deeply rooted social, legal and religious institution," and that it "reflects the natural biological complementarity between man and woman which predates the state and which is woven into the social and religious fabric of every major culture and society."

Marriage between man and woman "provides the most favorable environment in which to protect the rights and the best interests of children," the resolution stated.

Convention delegates adopted resolutions dealing with other public policy issues as well, including building a culture of life, religious liberty, the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, decency on the Internet and in the media, Catholic education, and the Pledge of Allegiance.
